After a night in La Ciotat, we arrived on the island of Porquerolles late afternoon. Porquerolles is one of these fantastically beautiful French islands with an exciting history. Throughout history many, from Greeks to Maltese, have fought over the island. In addition, France several 100 years ago thought it was a good idea to let criminals live on the island in the hope that they would became better citizens. The outcome was not as expected . Some used the land, others thought it was a great idea to become pirates full time 😱 Over the years the island has subsequently been a strong military fort for France. After several years when the island was completely fallow, in 1911 a Frenchman, who made himself rich on gold and silver mines in Mexico, bought Porquerolles to his fiancee as a morning gift. They started growing wine and develop and nurture the island's flora and fauna. Today, the island is a fantastic nature reserve where schoolchildren travel to learn about France's history and natural life. Outdoor enthusiasts of all nationalities also thrive here. So do we. A bucket list experience is ticked off 😎🍀
